UK spouse visa processing times in 2026

The Home Office publishes a service standard for partner visas and usually meets it, but the clock only starts when your biometrics are enrolled, and a request for more information resets expectations. Here is what to expect in 2026.
Standard timescales
- Applying from outside the UK: up to 12 weeks from the biometrics appointment.
- Applying from inside the UK (extension or switching): up to 8 weeks from biometrics.
- Settlement as a partner: up to 6 months.
Most straightforward applications from abroad are decided inside the 12 weeks; many in six to ten. Applications that go beyond the standard are usually ones where the Home Office has written for more evidence or is checking something in the history.
Paying for a faster decision
- Priority service: a decision within about 30 working days from abroad or 5 working days in the UK, for £500, where the visa application centre offers it.
- Super priority service: a decision by the end of the next working day after biometrics, UK applications only, £1,000.
Priority does not change the outcome, only the timing, and the Home Office can take a priority case out of the fast track if it needs more checks. Do not pay for priority on an application with a gap in the evidence.
What causes delays
Missing or inconsistent financial evidence is the most common cause, particularly around the £29,000 income rule and the £88,500 savings route. Others: untranslated documents, a TB certificate from a clinic that is not approved, an English test from the wrong provider, a previous refusal that needs explaining, and applications made in the run-up to a fee change when volumes spike.
While you wait
You can usually ask for your passport back from an overseas centre if you need to travel, though it pauses the application. Keep collecting relationship evidence; you will need it at the extension. Do not travel to the UK as a visitor while a partner application is pending unless you have taken advice, as it can be read as an intention to live here without the visa.
If it is late
Past the service standard you can contact UKVI through the enquiry service; after a significant delay a pre-action letter can prompt a decision. Most delays resolve without that.
